Camagüey, Cuba, Jul 26th.- With 50 years of work to benefit the health of infants in Ciego de Ávila, Las Tunas and Camagüey, the surgery service of the Eduardo Agramonte Piña Provincial Pediatric Hospital, in this city, exhibits important achievements in different procedures.

Elizabeth Hernández Moore, second degree specialist in Pediatric Surgery, explained that the placement of Tenckoff catheters for dialysis and ventriculoperitoneal catheters in patients with hydrocephalus stand out among the results with the greatest impact.

Similarly, he highlighted thoracic and oncological surgical interventions, partial splenectomy in children with hematological diseases and antibiotic prophylaxis in uncomplicated acute appendicitis, among others that have allowed raising the quality of life of minors.

Regarding the investigations, he pointed out among the most notable for their scientific and social contribution, those related to the conservative treatment of blunt abdominal trauma with solid viscera injury, the introduction of the sequential use of antimicrobials in complicated acute appendicitis and novel techniques in the care of newborns with abdominal wall defects.

It also meant non-operative treatment of uncomplicated intussusception, high survival in neonatal and infant surgery, minimal access surgery, and esophageal replacement by retrosternal esophageal coloplasty with satisfactory results.

In order to continue training medical personnel, he commented that doctorates, master’s degrees, research and teaching categories, national and international postgraduate courses are being developed, as well as events and publications that allow the exchange of experiences in this field of medicine.

The Pediatric Surgery specialty of this healthcare institution, he asserted, was the first in the country to receive, in 2018, the category of Excellence, granted by the National Accreditation Board, and its professionals have demonstrated the quality of service in countries such as Guyana, Mali, Congo, Zambia, Gambia, Venezuela and Belize.
