July, 2023.- Every July 25th marks the International Day of Afro-Latin and Afro-Caribbean Women, established in 1992 when representatives of 32 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean met in the Dominican Republic to define political advocacy strategies to confront racism.

The purpose of the date is to denounce the social situation of racism, sexism and discrimination faced by Afro-descendant women on the continent; It also calls for the recognition and visibility of the struggles for human rights, women’s rights and democratic construction.

It is usually found that Afro-descendant women face insults related to the denial of their beauty and the mention of their physical features such as hair, hairstyles, nose and mouth in a pejorative way, a reality that is sometimes appreciated in the school, work and social environment.

A common stereotype is that of an Afro-descendant woman being a domestic worker or cook, but not being a company manager, leader or representative of high positions in the public or political sphere.

Along this path, Cuba implements the National Program to fight racism and discrimination and the National Program for the Advancement of Women, which express through public policies and social programs the government’s will in favor of full equality for women and people of African descent.
