Camagüey, January 31th.- More than 1,100 students in the province of Camagüey receive the benefits of Special Education in the 21 schools enabled to care for different diagnoses.

Xiomara Leal González, head of that educational level in the Provincial General Directorate of Education, explained to the Cuban News Agency that 712 teachers, including speech therapists, psychopedagogues, support and outpatient teachers, serve the specialties of intellectual disability, the autism spectrum disorder, communication and behavior, as well as learning delay and sensory deficiencies.

As for the support teachers, he said, they are in charge of advising the management structures of the different schools where the students go, or in those where there are some in a condition of inclusion.

As part of this work, they prepare teachers to carry out their work with higher quality, and in the case of outpatient teachers, their mission, he commented, is to serve children who cannot attend educational centers due to having an intellectual disability and physical-motor.

Regarding the Third Educational Improvement, he stated that the schools where children with traffic diagnoses are found use the same bibliography and study programs of primary and basic secondary education, until they return to their educational level after overcoming their difficulty.

On the other hand, the diagnosis of intellectual disability, he noted, applies the same study program, although curricular adjustments are made as appropriate.

He added that among the subjects taught, those aimed at transforming behavior stand out, such as Social Communication for the students of the Ramiro Guerra Special School of Conduct.

Others, he noted, have the purpose of preparing people with intellectual disabilities for adult and independent life, through domestic education workshops and others where they learn the skills of trades such as masonry and carpentry.

During the years of training, he noted, they also prepare for graduation, and in that sense, he highlighted that, according to the diagnosis, students who opt for university careers, after taking the entrance exams to Higher Education, are grants the first option as part of the continuity of studies.

Essential for students, he assured, is sports practice, and in that sense he mentioned the Special Olympics Movement, whose regional event Camagüey will host in April of this year.
