Camagüey, Cuba, October 28th.- Every October 28th, Cubans of all ages remember the Señor de la Vanguardia, that day in 1959 Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriarán would depart from the Camagüey airport heading towards eternity.

Maintaining his legacy in the present, passing it on to new generations, is a task that falls largely on the educational system, specifically on the subject of History.

This is what Professor Yorvana Rodríguez, who teaches at the Rafael Guerra Vives pre-university institute, in the city, says. “It is a great challenge because it is about bringing to students all the revolutionary work and thought of men and women who existed many years ago, and that cannot be done if you are not completely in love, so to speak, with the profession or you understand very well the importance of the work of training”.

She also commented that, especially in grade 12, Camilo Cienfuegos is one of the figures of the Cuban epic on which the most emphasis is placed, also as a form of preparation for the entrance exams to Higher Education.

Not only flowers in the sea or rivers will serve to perpetuate the work and revolutionary thought of Camilo Cienfuegos, the presentation of the self-sacrificing, joyful and very patriotic man in the classrooms requires creativity and love for teaching. Responsibility that families and different student organizations also have so that each infant, adolescent or young person feels the inspiration to be like the Señor de la Vanguardia.

THE HISTORY OF CUBA IN CAPITAL LETTERS

Lino Valdés Cruz is teaching assistant director at the Rafael Guerra Vives pre-university institute, in the Ciudad de los Tinajones, although administrative tasks demand a large part of his time, he is not separated from the teaching of History.

We spoke with him to understand the need to maintain as a priority the knowledge that students receive through that subject.

“Knowledge of the History of Cuba, from a social point of view, is fundamental today given the need we have to keep alive all the values formed through the independence struggles, more than 150 years of contingencies, of confrontations, as it allows the student to have sufficient tools to face all the processes that the Revolution is currently facing.

These are times of struggles against external and internal enemies, struggles against propaganda that falls with greater insistence on the Island every day. Cuban youth today has to have and play a vital role within society as a defender of those values and as a representative of that new generation that, like those that preceded them -for example that of Fidel and Camilo– contributed to the formation of the Cuban national culture”.

Professor Lino Valdés also commented that in the preparation that the new generations obtain from subjects such as History and Civic Education, among others, there will be the greatest capacity to analyze current times with a revolutionary and critical sense.

“Today, if young people do not have a deep conviction of the History of Cuba, of life, of why certain events occurred, of why it is done and why we must continue defending our principles, of the Revolution, of Socialism , with other forms and methods, students would not have the possibility of facing situations that they are exposed to from the point of view of new technologies.

Today the students have to be prepared and the teacher is a main link in this process, during the teaching process inside the school, outside of it, together with society, in the place where they live, we must always keep in mind and we must show the student that knowledge of History is going to be a fundamental piece to understand ourselves and keep alive historical traditions, social conquests, and still have enough strength to conquer everything we want and all the political, economic and social projects that we the country arises and needs».

Future professionals of the district are enlisted from schools like Rafael Guerra Vives; from numbers, chemical elements and equations they receive the initial notions to determine the work path by which to undertake the journey of life; knowledge that will never be sufficient without that provided by local and national history.
