Camagüey, Cuba, Oct 6th.- Housing construction is not advancing with the required agility in the province of Camagüey, a situation confirmed by the levels of execution of state programs, due to subsidies, and own efforts.

Nadiezhda Guerra Avello, provincial director of the sector, explained that 1,479 properties were planned for this year, a figure that until the end of September reached 32 percent materialization, although it is expected to exceed that result during the course of this month.

The current results respond, fundamentally, to the limitations and deficit of resources derived from the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, a measure that prevents the acquisition of raw materials for construction processes.

The directive pointed out that, given this, there is an urgent need to search for alternatives to increase the local production of materials and the use of natural elements in the municipalities that allow progress in the construction of typology four homes (wooden houses) and using bricks instead of blocks, since the cement is reserved for other home accessories.

Other variants that are applied are the addition of vaulted ceilings, comfortable structures and resistant to climatic events, and in this sense the experience in the Las Mercedes tile, in the El Porvenir neighborhood, was stated with the cooperation of the Industry of Construction Materials of Popular Power, in the municipality of Camagüey.

Guerra Abello pointed out that the state plan reaches 20 percent, with the completion of 106 houses, while those subsidized by the State continue at a slow pace with only 88 of the more than 500 planned being completed.

In another order, she assessed the program as positive and progressing through the population’s own efforts with respect to the year 2022, achieving 275 homes in the current period.

In general terms, last August 469 homes were completed and in September work was done on the completion of 52.

The provincial director of Housing in Camagüey assured that, although the aforementioned figures do not satisfy the needs of the housing fund given the level of accumulated deterioration, it reflects the government’s will to put the resource where it is most needed with the premise of finishing each work with due construction quality, a constant demand from the population that does not allow oversight.
