Olorum Award Awarding Announced in Camagüey

Camagüey, Cuba, Aug 10th.- The XII Festival Olorum, Irradiando Aché, sponsored by the Folkloric Ballet of Camagüey (BFC, Spanish Acronym), is dedicated to the presence of women in folkloric dance.

The President of the Organizing Committee, Reinaldo Echemendía, through a telephone call, announced to Bertha Armiñán Linares from Santiago, the decision to award her the 2023 Olorum Prize, for the work of her life.

“It is, above all things, a recognition of an excellent figure of Cuban folkloric singing; therefore, the Organizing Committee of the Festival and the Artistic Technical Council of the Folkloric Ballet of Camagüey, determined to give the award to a woman who has been a bastion of folklore and traditional popular culture of the country”.

According to references on social networks, Bertha Armiñán Linares, considered a Diva of Folk Song, is the founder of the folk song and dance movement, when in 1959 she joined the group Cantos y toques de Oriente, later converted into the Conjunto Folclórico de Oriente; and in the 1990s it became part of the Cutumba Folkloric Ballet.

The artist has performed on stages in more than twenty countries, and has received numerous awards, to which is now added the one conferred by the Olorum Festival, for her life’s work.

By telephone, from Santiago de Cuba, teacher Bertha Armiñán thanked the Olorum Award, “and all the people who in one way or another have thought of this tribute; thank you for having me present; and I hope that I can comply with you, because I have the best disposition to be in Camagüey”.

The Folkloric Ballet of Camagüey, through the Olorum Festival, dedicated this year to the presence of women in folkloric song and dance, also promotes the candidacy of Bertha Armiñán Linares for the National Dance Award.

“We intend with this award to stimulate her, give her strength, give her energy, so that she continues contributing to the legacy of traditional popular culture and folklore; and that it can be considered a National Dance Award, which is what we have requested from the eastern part of Cuba.

“In this way, we want to take this first step; and when she arrives in Camagüey we will pay her other tributes, which are very deserved for the great contribution she has given to the culture of our country”.

From next September 14th  to 17th, the XII Olorum Irradiando Aché Festival will be held, whose program includes the delivery of the Olorum 2023 Award.
