Camagüey, Cuba, April 13th.- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine María Caridad Alemán Brunet leads the rabies prevention program in the municipality of Camagüey, a disease that can be fatal if not treated in time.

“Rabies is a disease that has no cure unless the person undergoes preventive treatment, because rabies has an incubation period in people of up to 14 months”, he commented.

And he added: “We are highly concerned with the population because the number of injured people arriving at health areas has decreased considerably in recent years, and this -he said- constitutes the first step to take action; the protocols establish the observation of the animal for 10 days by colleagues from the Municipal Hygiene Unit”.

The specialist recalled that whenever an animal bites a person, anti-rabies treatment should be applied, particularly with those that are wild, such as bats and mongooses.

As part of the prevention program actions, community health personnel are trained on good practices; In addition, logistics are currently being organized so that once the syringes enter the territory, the Anti-Rabies Vaccination Campaign can be developed, which is carried out every year.
