Camagüey, Cuba, Dec 14th.- Regarding the new management model of the sugar agroindustry, debates arose at the Provincial Sugar with + Science Workshop promoted by the sugar group entities together with the Provincial Branch of the Association of Sugar Technicians of Cuba (ATAC, Spanish Acronym).

Melba Ana García González, president of the ATAC, explained to Granma that the main objective of the meeting is to unite positions and efforts among all the actors who have the responsibility of implementing a new business model that goes beyond the traditional.

Today we are called to revalue the value chain, starting from sugar cane, but breaking the monoproduction scheme. The main source of income is no longer sugar and that is why we will be talking about energy, animal feed, and contributions to the pharmaceutical industry, he added.

DrC Oscar Parrado Álvarez, professor at the University of Camagüey Ignacio Agramonte explained the importance of human resources as a mobilizer of science for the diversification of the sugar agroindustry.

For Parrado Álvarez, it is inexcusable that the subject related to sugar cane is optional for agronomists. Specialization has been lost in the sugarcane part while in the industrial part it is maintained even up to postgraduate courses.

It was not by chance that Commander in Chief Fidel Castro devised a training chain from rural basic secondary schools to university courses related to that sector. It was an intentional process, directed and above all linked to production, which paid off, he emphasized.

The scientific program also evaluated agricultural and industrial topics, the revaluation of the sugar cane agroindustry, industry 4.0 and automation.
