Camagüey, Cuba, Sep 17th.- Oral and maxillofacial rehabilitation is of vital importance for Cuban dentistry. This medical practice gives people back parts of their body that are lost or absent, helping them feel whole again.
In Cuba, this initiative has been possible since 1999 with the creation of the national assistance network for facial rehabilitation and bucomaxillofacial prostheses.
Dr. Isidro de Jesús Nápoles González, a second-degree specialist in dental prosthetics at the Julio Antonio Mella polyclinic in this city, shares the history of the multidisciplinary dental clinic, which was established in 1975 in the municipality of Camagüey. This initiative has been crucial for the care of patients with oral and maxillofacial defects, facilitating their rehabilitation using the resources available at that time.
Since its creation, the clinic has evolved, integrating various specialties to offer a comprehensive approach to the treatment of these conditions, he added.
He stressed that this model of care not only improves the quality of life of patients, but also strengthens collaboration between health professionals in the region.
Nápoles González explained that since 2015, the health institution where he works has started to carry out practices with nasal prostheses, individual ocular prostheses, internal earpieces and palatal obturators for maxillary defects.
Martha Díaz Hernández, who works in the prosthesis consultation of this health area, highlighted that patients value aesthetic recovery, psychological well-being and satisfaction with the results obtained, serving people of all ages, from children to the elderly, in the bucomaxillofacial prosthesis service.
This deeply human specialty seeks to restore quality of life to convalescents and their families despite the limitations that the country faces with the importation of medical supplies.
The experience accumulated over the years has allowed the medical team at the Julio Antonio Mella polyclinic in the capital of Camagüey to develop innovative techniques and treatments, adapting to the changing needs of the population. This commitment to excellence in dental care continues to be a fundamental pillar in the oral health of the Camagüeyan community.
