The educational system in Camagüey, a key manager of one of the most important and sacred processes of the Cuban Revolution, faces many different challenges
Camagüey, Cuba, Sep 2nd.- More than 100,000 students are returning to school today in Camagüey, Cuba’s largest region, for a new school year full of challenges despite the economic difficulties the country faces.
In statements to the local press, the director of Education in the province, Loreley Suárez, highlighted the opening of 16 children’s houses, an alternative for working families who join the child care circle system, in addition to the inauguration of two new primary schools in rural areas, which are important steps in this school year.
For Camagüey, improving teacher coverage, one of the difficulties of the last five years, is being addressed with new strategies and for this purpose teachers are being methodologically prepared with training programs.
A total of 735 centres will be open as of today, and Suárez herself said that “the main challenge we face is the issue of completing the teaching coverage; we must start with 84 percent of the staff covered.
“This means that we are starting with needs, and the coverage we have already included 547 graduates of pedagogical training who must join our classrooms, 85 from the university and the rest from secondary level, so the monitoring and incorporation of these new graduates is one of the priority tasks”, he commented.
The teacher also noted that work has been ongoing to ensure the material base for study and the living conditions of the different centres, as well as the second grade books for primary education.
«Shelter, uniforms, food and school transportation are guaranteed. Priority is given to the strategy of attending to 12th grade and the continuity of studies at the Pedagogical School. And the opening of the new children’s houses with personnel from the Ministry of Education», he said.
Regarding the quality of the educational process, he warned that “everything that has to do with the reading strategy, the quality of primary education, the admission strategy, pre-university education with access to higher education are also priorities for this school year, and we really did not achieve the results that the province had set for ourselves”.
The educational system in Camagüey, a key manager of one of the most important and sacred processes of the Cuban Revolution, which has had the sector as a priority for more than six decades of government management, faces many different challenges.
