Camagüey, Cuba, May 16th.- Until next Friday, the Risk and Disaster Reduction Week takes place in Camagüey, which will culminate the weekend with the Meteoro 2024 exercise.
The main objective is to carry out actions that allow us to face the upcoming cyclonic season (June 1 to November 30) in better conditions, as well as other dangers of severe local storms, intense drought, fires, earthquakes and those of health origin.
Working on the unclogging and cleaning of sewers, ditches, river beds and bridges, mooring roofs, eliminating micro-landfills, sanitation, and pruning and felling trees that pose a risk, are some of the priorities to be executed.
This time it also coincided with National Fire Week, which began with a large fire extinguishing exercise.
«Community work, together with that of Communal, Hydraulic Resources and Sanitation, must be intense in all municipalities, but especially in the capital, since it covers 50 percent (%) of all the problems of the province», Villegas said.
«Camagüey has the characteristic that two rivers with several streams cross it, and there are also serious problems with the city’s drainage and its maintenance, added to the fact that we have housing illegalities in low areas where the population has become even more vulnerable», he added.
As for the cyclonic season, according to the forecasts of the National Institute of Meteorology, it will be very active, with a high probability (80%) that Cuba will be affected by at least one tropical cyclone with hurricane category.
With a lot of statistical aspect, and based on the history and the oceanic and atmospheric conditions that predominate and can influence the behavior of the season, the formation of 20 organisms is expected (14 in the Atlantic Ocean area, four in the Caribbean Sea and two in the Gulf of Mexico) between tropical storms and hurricanes.
“The latter must be eleven, with high probabilities of the formation and intensification of one in the Caribbean, and that one of Atlantic origin penetrates. Other factors that may have an impact have also been assessed, such as the high surface temperature of the sea, the behavior of the El Niño phenomenon, which is already receding, and the appearance of La Niña», explained Beatriz Martínez Pérez, director of the Camagüey Meteorological Center.
On Saturday the 18th, the Meteor 2024 exercise will begin, with the aim of strengthening preparation and response capabilities to face disaster dangers of natural, technological and health origin.
That first day will be dedicated to the management and command bodies, who will specify the risk reduction plans in the province, the decisions for response to disaster cases, the forces and means for rescue and rescue actions, the operation of early warning systems, among other topics.
He stressed the importance of adding as many people as possible and that many actions occur at the community level, with the participation of the population, to arrive ready for the complicated cyclonic season on the next day 1st.
