National Day on Equalization of Opportunities concludes in Camagüey

Camagüey, Cuba, Dec 7th.- United in action to rescue and achieve the objectives of social development for, with and by people with disabilities was the premise that led the actions in the territory as part of the National Day of equalization of opportunities.

Between November 27th and December 6, action was taken throughout the region with the call to make visible the inclusion of people with some type of disability in society, explained Dr. Sandra Díaz Mayedo, coordinator of the program in the health sector.

The Day passed with sports, cultural, community and training activities, joined by various organizations, different associations, special education and families to advance the purpose of achieving real inclusion.

The specialist confirmed that the year’s actions included the improvement of the quality of services in health institutions, the stability of the Defectology Service in each health area and the operation of 27 rehabilitation rooms.

She added that there are low vision consultations in secondary care, equipment is sold in the province’s Hearing Center, as well as prosthetic and diagnostic programs; and in the Technical Orthopedics and Orthopedic Footwear laboratories it was possible to assist people even with the existing resource limitations.

Díaz Mayedo specified that in Camagüey there is a program to care for patients with deafblindness, of low incidence but requiring differentiated attention, and the Psychopedagogical Center was repaired with the renovation of furniture and other services.

Regarding the link with institutions such as Education and Labor and Social Security, he said that progress is being made in inclusion in the communities where they put into practice the skills created during student life and the vulnerable are helped in various aspects.
