Managua, Sep 20.- Government institutions of the Sandinista National Liberation Front are working to reduce the number of traffic accidents that take place annually in Nicaragua.
For this purpose, a new traffic education booklet is circulating in the country, which, according to the authorities, was designed for drivers, passengers and pedestrians.
“This booklet is aimed at all drivers because we need to talk, talk, share driver education in our homes, neighborhoods, markets, parks, workplaces, throughout the community, in the family (…)” said the inspector general of the National Police, Jaime Vanegas.
The head of the National Traffic Directorate, General Commissioner Vilma Reyes, reported that car accidents in Nicaragua increased by 4.5 percent, 1,434 more than in 2021.
Reyes explained on the national television that 25 percent of these events occur in Nicaragua because drivers drive while intoxicated. She also said that most accidents happen on weekends, especially between 5:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. local time.
The police authority called for hard work from the families in order to make people aware and educate them to use the road correctly and avoid unfortunate events.
According to official data, more than 660 deaths were caused by traffic accidents in Nicaragua this year. (PL)
