Havana, Cuba, 11 Sep.- Army General Álvaro López Miera, a member of the Political Bureau and Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, on Friday decorated 27 officers who participated in extinguishing the fire at the Matanzas supertanker base.

The decorated received, indistinctly, the order For the service to the Fatherland in the FAR of 3rd. degree, the Calixto García medal and the distinction Distinguished service, reported the newspaper Juventud Rebelde.

The group of recognized officers carried out more than 480 bombardments of water on the industrial zone matancera and his contribution was essential to avoid the spread of the fire.

The first lieutenant Darián Báez Reyes, aviation armament officer of the helicopter squadron of San Antonio de los Baños, recalled the hard hours of the disaster and the collective desire to end the disaster.

He added that the work was intense, especially when flying over the disaster site at high temperatures, also when they had to approach the water of the bay under strong winds and, finally, to descend again close to the danger and the constant explosions caused by the burning tanks.

At the end of the event, the FAR minister said that these officers deserve our full recognition.
